The Veil Marauder Class: Abilities, Mobility, and How It Plays

How the Marauder class works in The Veil: Surge Aura, Vanishing Gambit, Flash Step, its speed-focused PvP role, and what to know about unlocking it.

The Marauder in The Veil is a mobility-focused class described in-game as "ruthless bandits specializing in speed and dirty tactics." Its kit does almost no direct damage — its strength is speed, chasing down fleeing players, and escaping fights. If you pick it, the key behavior to understand is that you win by never being caught, not by trading hits. "Speed Merchant" in some video titles is a creator nickname, not an in-game class name; the confirmed name is Marauder.

Class identity

The Marauder is widely framed as a PvP kit in a largely PvE-oriented game. One creator calls it "kind of a PvP class in a PvE game," pitched at players who want to PvP and stay untouchable. A community tier list places it in C tier (the lowest in that ranking), reflecting its emphasis on speed over raw damage.

Verified abilities

  • Surge Aura — "become the wind itself" and gain +15% speed, +15% swing speed, and 20% stamina regeneration. The +15% swing speed makes it especially good for dagger and spear players; gameplay shows visibly faster attack output with the aura active.
  • Vanishing Gambit — a teleport that makes you "disappear in the blink of an eye" and reappear behind a targeted enemy. With the class bonus, it stuns the target and reduces the aura's cooldown to 30 seconds. It requires being very close to the target, and it sometimes fails to connect on the first attempt — effective mainly for catching fleeing players.
  • Flash Step — gained when dashing, effectively turning dashes into teleport-style flashes. Spamming it covers distance faster than anything else tested.
  • Class bonus — +8% speed boost and +10% resistance boost (per the in-game information screen).

Vanishing Gambit's stun and its occasional whiff are observed behavior from gameplay footage rather than confirmed tooltipped mechanics, and the game was still early in its balance cycle at launch — recheck ability names and stat values in-game after updates.

Movement and practical use

A speed-stacked Marauder is effectively uncatchable — one opponent with an epic weapon reported never landing a hit. Vanishing Gambit excels at "chasing down people that are trying to run from you," and teleport dashes function as superior dashes. Recommended pairing: Hermes boots (+8% speed) and Anklet of the Wind (+12% speed), making the build among the fastest in The Veil — suited to ganking, taking bounties, and escaping.

Weaknesses are real: movement is slower in combat, none of the moves deal damage, and the class is highly vulnerable to summon-heavy PvP — imp swarms can one-shot Marauders, making summons the main counter. Assessments also differ: one creator calls the class impractical ("I literally nerfed my character by going this class," though he partially walked that back after experiencing the speed in a real fight), while another concludes it is "actually pretty cool for ganking" and among the fastest builds in the game. The honest takeaway: it is a specialist PvP chaser's tool, not an all-rounder, and balance may shift how it feels.

Acquisition and the timed trial (summary)

The Marauder is granted by an NPC (named Dash in the tier-list table) in the Echo Hold area, and unlocking it involves a timed trial: run to Echo Hold on foot within a 3-minute timer with no teleporting or cheating, then pay the trainer 1,000 silver. Reported additional requirements are currently inconsistent: the trainer is described as requiring 15 sins plus 15 offerings (gathered from items like the Idol of Hatreds in the Weeping Crypt), while the tier list lists it as 15 Offerings only — check the trainer's menu in-game for the current cost. Attempting the trial at night is not recommended, and one player described the parkour-heavy run as "annoying," needing roughly five attempts. The full step-by-step route is covered on the class trainer page.
