The Veil Sanity: Night Drain, Recovery & Route Habits
Why sanity drains at night in The Veil, how to recover it with campfires and sanity potions, and how to plan exploration runs around the sanity clock.
Sanity is The Veil's survival clock, and it is designed to drain at night. Campfires and sanity potions are the confirmed ways to recover it — so before starting a deep run, check the sky and know where your nearest campfire is.
Recognizing sanity changes
Sanity ticks down as you explore after dark, and it drops alongside the game's other night danger: hordes are thickest at night, so the sanity clock and the world's threat both run after sunset. Watch your sanity indicator on any run that stretches past dusk — a long labyrinth dive that starts in daylight can end deep in the dark with the clock already draining.
Why sanity drains at night
Night drain is the intended rule, not an accident. The first launch patch famously fixed a bug where sanity drained during the day but not at night — the developer's own patch note read "wtf" — and a second pass the same day fixed remaining sanity issues. In other words, daytime drain only ever existed as a launch-day bug.
The system is actively being tuned. The game is on Beta v1.0.0 with weekly patches, so expect sanity behavior to shift; recheck your habits after each update.
Recovery methods
Two recovery methods are community-confirmed, though no official numbers are published yet:
- Campfires — found in the labyrinth, the standard wayfarer's rest, and the standard way to recover sanity. Grab them when you see them so you always know where the nearest rest point is.
- Sanity potions — consumables that restore sanity. Worth carrying on night runs, and worth carrying on day runs too given how actively the mechanics are being patched.
Exactly how much either restores has not been verified, so treat both as "restores enough to keep going" rather than planning around specific values.
What low sanity does (unconfirmed)
The downside of ignoring sanity is not fully mapped yet. Players consistently report that low sanity attracts a specific monster that appears at night — "he spawns at night with low sanity" is the recurring line in community channels — but the threshold, the mechanics and the counterplay remain unconfirmed. Separately, the Whaleborn race carries a +10% insanity drawback, which hints that insanity effects scale in ways that matter, pending community verification.
Route habits that protect sanity
- Check the sky before diving. A long deep run that starts at dusk ends in the dark.
- Start longer labyrinth runs during daytime. Explore, complete objectives, grab loot, and learn the map by day so night doesn't catch you deep inside unprepared.
- Treat campfires as waypoints. Route your runs between them instead of pushing through the night.
- Carry sanity potions even on day runs. Patch history shows sanity mechanics are being actively tuned; a spare potion is cheap insurance.
Races and sanity
A note for racial planning: the Hiveling's night resistance protects your body, not your sanity — you will still drain after dark. Whaleborn's +10% insanity drawback suggests insanity-related effects can be race-relevant, but the exact interaction with the sanity system is unconfirmed.
