How to Get Festered Meat in The Veil & Use It at the Altar
Where current evidence says Festered Meat comes from (the Hiveling Titan chest on the Disease Era route) and how to place it on the final altar to trigger the Disease Era finale.
Festered Meat comes from the Hiveling Titan's chest on the Disease Era main route, and its only use is placing it on the final altar beneath the maze to summon The Festering Wound — the Disease Era's final boss. The chest is a reported source, not a guaranteed drop with a published rate, so keep the item safe once you have it.
What Festered Meat is used for
Festered Meat is a quest material, not a weapon or consumable food. Its only documented purpose is to summon The Festering Wound, the final boss of the Disease Era. Placing it on the final altar starts that encounter, and defeating the boss ends the Era of Disease — officially marked by the DISEASE PURIFIED badge — opening the door toward the Primordial Era.
Note the name overlap: the item is frequently written as "Fester Meat" in playthrough footage and some guides, but it is not the boss itself — The Festering Wound is the encounter it summons. The official in-game spelling hasn't been reconciled in the material available.
How to get Festered Meat
The documented acquisition point is on the Disease Era main route, during the Hiveling stretch:
- Progress the main quest chain until the route reaches the Hiveling stretch (after the runner camp / Ancient Bones objectives).
- Hiveling Titan appears around this stretch; defeating it and opening its chest is the reported source of Festered Meat.
- Keep the item — do not sell or discard it — because the main quest requires it at the final altar.
Two caveats worth knowing:
- The chest is framed as a reported source, not a guaranteed drop with a published rate, and no drop rate can be inferred from recorded runs.
- Whether the Hiveling Titan fight is required immediately or only when your active quest objective demands it is determined by the live quest marker — this may vary by patch.
Where and how to use it at the altar
- Confirm Festered Meat is in your inventory before making the descent — the finale objective needs it.
- Follow the active quest marker down beneath the maze toward the final altar. No fixed coordinates are documented beyond this marker-based route.
- Restock before interacting: heal up, repair or replace weak gear, and finish other errands. The arena seals once the boss is summoned — it's a point of no return.
- Place (lay) the Festered Meat on the altar. This summons The Festering Wound and closes the recorded arena.
- If your group isn't present or supplies are low, wait before interacting — you cannot leave the sealed fight once it starts.
Recorded boss health was roughly 9,000 HP in one group, but party size and patch tuning can change this. For attack counters and healing prep, use the dedicated Festering Wound boss guide.
If Festered Meat is missing or the altar does not trigger
Evidence-backed checks before the descent:
- Confirm Festered Meat is still in your inventory — the route explicitly warns not to sell or discard it while progressing.
- If you never obtained it, revisit the Hiveling Titan stretch; the chest is the reported source, and no alternative acquisition method is documented in the material available.
- If the quest marker stops helping, toggle the central quest indicator and reselect the active main quest.
- Check the Bestiary (Information tab) if the target encounter or material is unclear.
- Confirm you're on a current server — dated patch changes have altered waypoints and spawns earlier in the era.
What isn't settled in the material available: whether the chest can be re-farmed if the meat was lost, and whether any fixed altar location exists independent of the quest marker. Since the game is in beta and updates have already changed spawns and waypoints, recheck acquisition and altar behavior after each patch.
